In a 2014 survey of 1,000 Americans conducted by the automotive website Edmunds, most said buying a vehicle was more stressful than getting married or going on a first date. But it doesn’t have to be an uncomfortable experience- shopping at Helfman Jeep is not only *enjoyable* but you can also rest assured that you’re supporting a business that gives back to its community.

When it comes to community philanthropy, Alan Helfman, President of 5 Helfman Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Fiat, Maserati, and Ford dealerships (including River Oaks Jeep), and HCC Foundation Ambassador whose generous philanthropy we previously highlighted is incredibly charitable to his Houston community- he donates resources, his time, and helps fundraise for countless causes. A particular cause that resonates with Mr. Helfman is our city’s first responders- our police force and fire departments. Alan doesn’t just show up for philanthropy during a crisis, over the years, he’s organized over 100 fundraisers and given over $1 million of his own money to the Houston Police Department (HPD). “My passion for the HPD is helping the widows pay the bills and stay in their homes, helping the guys who are hurt or sick—it’s really good money.”

Alan has done so much, in fact, that in 2021 he received the Houston Police Department’s first “Lifetime Achievement Award” and is getting a Houston Community College program named the Alan Helfman Criminal Justice / Law Enforcement Program. The Helfman family has focused on serving first-responders, particularly those who have been injured or the families who have lost loved ones in the line of duty. They personally have conducted more than 100 fundraising events for several law enforcement agencies, particularly the Houston Police Officers’ Union. Even as recently as April 15th, 2022, Alan Helfman raised $50,000 for a deceased peace officer’s family.

Public safety is public service, and that’s what police work is all about.  Although, something that we sometimes forget about public safety officers is that they’re people too. Sure, they’re part of something bigger than themselves, but when they take off the blue, or black, or brown uniform, they’re just like us. They have the same hopes, dreams, regrets, and worries. They have moms and dads, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, and sons and daughters at home. They’re human beings who are elevated by their willingness to sacrifice. The fact is that our law enforcement officers can’t know what new challenges they’ll encounter or what new threats they’ll be expected to confront when they’re on the job. As such, it’s important we honor them and the risks they take on daily to ensure our safety.
