It’s that time again, Hurricane season. Hurricane season usually starts from May 20 to November 30, but the months of September and early October seem to be the peak of the season with a higher frequency of hurricanes as the water warms up. Staying healthy and safe in a crisis is paramount, which is why we curated a list of important supplies to prepare yourself and your family for the stressful hurricane season:

  • Water: water is an essential supply, it is used for bathing, drinking, cooking, and more. Stock up on water at least a gallon per person or even more.
  • Food: Eating might be one of the last things on your mind during a storm but after the impact, you’ll need to eat something in order to stay healthy and alive. You should have at least a week’s supply of food or more.
  • First aid kit: accidents are bound to occur, they are almost inevitable make sure you have a first aid kit and also medicine for various symptoms, you never know what might happen. 
  • Batteries: access to electricity probably won’t be available, batteries are an alternative you can use them to power your flashlight, radio and more things that require electricity.
  • Flashlight: Electricity is usually the first thing to go, making everywhere hot, and dark. A battery-powered flashlight will allow you to access things in dark areas. 
  • Sanitation/ Personal Hygiene products: The water from the hurricane will probably be dirty and full of microorganisms it is important to practice proper sanitation habits. Personal hygiene products such as pads, deodorant, and body washes should be stored just in case.
  • Battery Powered weather radio: the flooding will probably prevent you from interacting with your neighbors to know what’s happening, there is probably no electricity to power the TV to watch the news. A battery-powered radio is the best way to know what’s happening in your area.
  • Waterproof safe: Have a waterproof safe to keep all your important documents that are irreplaceable or hare to replace. Documents like your diploma, birth certificate, and driver’s license. 
  • Cash: imagine having no access to the ATM or all the ATMs’s have no electricity, which means that you would have no efficient way to remove money from your card. In case of any emergency, it is important.
  • Books and Board games: In a serious situation like this, it is important to be considerate of the children. With no electricity and access to the internet, books and board games are a good way to keep everyone entertained and to lighten the mood.
